Considering a DashWare alternative

Bring supported recordings into a current desktop workflow

DashWare is a legacy Windows overlay tool. Its current official download, support commitment and compatibility with current Windows versions were not verified in our source check. An unavailable website alone does not establish a shutdown date or prove that every existing installation fails.

GaugeReel imports timestamped GPX and FIT activities and GoPro GPMF when present in an original MP4. DJI footage needs an external supported track. Design your overlay locally, then export transparent PNG images or chroma-key MP4 on Free. Paid plans add alpha video options for compatible editors.

Free exports core gauges without a watermark, up to 1920 pixels wide, 1080 high and 30 fps. Basic adds ProRes 4444 MOV and WebM; Premium adds higher dimensions and Send to Resolve.

Switching over

Coming from DashWare, in three steps

GaugeReel does not import DashWare XML gauges or profiles. Rebuild your layout using supported GPX, FIT or GoPro GPMF data; other formats need separate conversion.

1

Use supported telemetry

Import a timestamped GPX or Garmin FIT activity, or an original GoPro MP4 containing GPMF. GaugeReel does not directly import NMEA, CSV or native DJI logs; use a supported source or convert those files separately.

2

Rebuild the overlay, richer

There is no DashWare importer — its XML gauges are not compatible. You do not need them: pick an activity profile, drop in speed, altitude, HR, power or G-force gauges, and restyle in minutes.

3

Export a transparent layer

Export a transparent PNG sequence on Free, or choose an alpha video format included in your paid plan. Basic adds ProRes 4444 MOV and VP9 WebM; Premium adds Send to Resolve. Use a format supported by your editor and match its frame rate.

Be honest — you have options

The modern DashWare replacements, side by side

GaugeReel isn't the only maintained tool that fills the gap DashWare left. Here's who each one genuinely suits.

GaugeReel

This page

A modern desktop app with a genuinely free, watermark-free tier, broadcast-style gauges and one-click DaVinci Resolve export on Premium.

Best if you want a free start, transparent layers for any editor and a clean modern UI.

RaceRender

A long-running motorsport tool (HP Tuners) with a wide format list and a one-time license. Dated interface; free tier watermarks output.

Best if you live in track data (VBO/CSV/FIT) and prefer paying once to own it.

Telemetry Overlay

An established overlay tool with broad camera and logger support, sold as a $199 perpetual license with one year of updates and support.

Best if its supported device formats match your recordings and you prefer a one-time purchase.

No paywall to try it

What the free tier actually exports

DashWare was free; a modern replacement should let you start free too. It does — these all ship at $0, no watermark.
